Joining SynthImmune as an Independent Group Leader

SynthImmune establishes a transdisciplinary research network across Heidelberg and Mannheim, integrating expertise in synthetic biology, immunology, nanotechnology, and computational modelling. We bring together researchers across disciplines to advance bottom-up synthetic immunology, aiming to engineer immune function from molecular building blocks and translate these insights into new therapeutic strategies.
To further strengthen this collaborative environment, SynthImmune invites applications from independent Principal Investigators (PIs) whose research complements and extends the Cluster’s scientific program.

Applicants must demonstrate:

Association with one of our university partners (Heidelberg University, Medical Faculty Heidelberg, Medical Faculty Mannheim) or our extra-university partners (MPImF, DKFZ, EMBL Heidelberg, HITS)
Scientific independence through an established research group and a track record of independent publications
Independent funding and access to appropriate research infrastructure
A clear thematic fit with SynthImmune‘s research focus on engineering immune function through synthetic biology

Proposed projects must align with at least one of SynthImmune‘s core research areas:

Project 1: Function-based Selection and Molecular Characterization of Highly Efficient Immune Cells
Project 2: Microphysiological Model Systems
Project 3: Nanotechnology-based Therapeutics and Vaccines
Project 4: Engineering Targeting and Delivery
Project 5: Towards Synthetic Immune Effector Cells
Project 6: Computational Modelling for Prediction and Validation of Key Parameters of Immunity
Project 7: Ethics and Implementation
Projects that bridge multiple areas or connect experimental and computational approaches are particularly encouraged, reflecting the Cluster’s integrative strategy. More information on our different projects can be found here.
SynthImmune seeks PIs who contribute new perspectives, technologies, or conceptual approaches to the Cluster’s interdisciplinary framework. An overview of our technology platforms can be found here.
